Celler Grau I Grau is a small family business located in Pla de Bages, specifically in Maians township, just next to the old Maians Vell Castle, a Romanesque building, built in 924 A.D.
Pla de Bages is a privileged region, surrounded by some mountain ranges such us Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Òbac, Moianès and Montserrat declared natural park; Rubió, Castelltallat and Garrigues mountain ranges, too. Moreover, this Catalan zone has had a long tradition in producing wines since XIXth century, when it became one of the main economic activities.
We have to go back to 1885 when our ancestors began to farm our own vineyards and work in wine world, being in 1966 when Jaume Grau Grau (the founder of our cellar) built the first wine cellar where they bottled the first bottles.
Since then, we have continued working the vineyards and producing wines, and in 1998 we received the greatest recognition, that is to become a member of Designation of Origin Pla de Bages. It is a symbol of good work, thanks to the constant effort and the passion to get the best of every harvest and every wine.
And now we, the fifth generation, are managing the cellar Grau i Grau being very proud of having long wine tradition but giving new and fresh ideas to get closer to our customers.
Our philosophy is to produce wines with a traditional and highly personalized dedication, especially in the first step of the elaboration, that is the vineyard. Our passion, our effort and our perseverance have defined us and for this reason now we have started to produce high quality BIO Wines.
The Secret of our wines
Bages region has an ideal condition for wine cultivation. It has an exceptional climate, limited rain, strong thermal oscillation and the vineyards are surrounded by a lot of pine trees and oaks trees, thyme and rosemary that make our wines have a special peculiarity and a big identity, and this can be seen in local varieties like white Picapoll, a native grape that has become a Bages symbol since it’s the only zone of Spain that it is grown.
Celler Grau I Grau, has its own vineyards (20 hectares in 2012) located in approximately 600 meters altitude (between two regions, Anoia and Bages). So, the wines have different expressions from the land and the people who work on them. This type of land and climate make very fresh wines with a good concentration and able to become aged with a high quality.
We carry out an organic farming in our vineyards, taking care of the environment and preserving the our territory, so we produce Organic Wines keeping the traditions, the flavors and the tastings of our wines, making them healthier.
We produce white Picapoll, a native grape, Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay and white Sauvignon; and red wines Tempranillo, Garnatxa, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sumoll, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
